At some point the two winter squash plants will take over, but in the meantime, how about some greens (mizuna) and basil? Here are the basil sprouts just coming up along the edge of one of the 6' raised beds.
Here are some rattlesnake beans I planted along the edge of the other one. I think I might put up some stakes and twine as a trellis for them as well, so we can get two ranks of vines in this bed: the first rank for the perennials (honeysuckle and the maypop), the second for the lower-priority string beans.
Lest you think the rattlesnake beans indicate a secret heirloom fetish, know that they instead indicate my very public love of the score. It hit me that the same rattlesnake beans you can get bulk at Whole Foods are the ones you can pay a lot more (per weight) for as seeds, so I just got a handful two winters ago and I've used them since.
