A Weakness for Mushrooms
You could say I wasted half an hour on mushrooms tonight, but I like them so much I can't help it. I also needed to unwind after half a day of mildly stressful work and child care (and before another few hours of work), so I took the three pounds of mushrooms (a mix of button and brown) we picked up at the produce truck on 44th and Sansom (the best place to buy produce in W. Philly - suck it, Clark Park Farmer's Market), dunked them in water to rinse off most of the bits of soil, and split them into two treatments.
I started a batch of the Joy of Cooking's salted mushrooms recipe, which is basically a pickling recipe. You seal them in salt water and let them sit at room temperature a few days. The rest I tossed with some thyme, garlic, vinegar (half white, half balsamic) and olive oil for basic marinated mushrooms. I love both as easy snacks in a week or so when they're done, and M digs them too.
